Bursary

Bursary is a form of financial assistance to students to facilitate completion of their study.


explanatory context

Bursaries take various forms in different countries. They may be conditional loans or non-repayable grants. They may be universal or available to only certain categories of students or for certain subjects.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) (undated) defines bursary as:

Bursaries (and scholarships) are financial help for students, often from poorer backgrounds, that are aimed at easing the transition into higher education and helping them successfully complete their studies. Commonly they are means-tested, but some are based on other criteria such as academic merit.
