Public information


core definition

Public information, in the context of higher education, is the data and information made available to inform the public.


explanatory context

Public information enables prospective students and staff to make judgements about applications. It provides a degree of public accountability. It helps employers to determine appropriate links with universities or colleges. It provides additional material to propsective donors or other funders.


analytical review

The UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) (undated) states:

Public information: Information that is freely available to the public (sometimes referred to as being 'in the public domain').
