Regional accreditation
Regional accreditation is recognition of an institution within a regional context. It is much the same as national accreditation but is not restricted to national boundaries.
In the USA, for example, accreditation is done on a regional (sub-national basis).
Elsewhere, such as Central America, consortia of countries have developed regional (super-national) accrediting arrangements.
The UNESCO definition is:
Accreditation granted to a higher education institution by a recognized accrediting association or commission that conducts accreditation procedures in a particular geographic area (usually that of three or more states). The United States has six regional accrediting commissions. (Vlãsceanu, et al., 2004, p. 20)
