Standards of competence

core definition

Standards of competence specify the technical abilities, knowledg and skills required to become a safe and accomplished exponent of a particular profession or other field of activity.

explanatory context

Standards of competence principally refer to the standards set by professional bodies (or in some countries government bodies) that spcify the skills and knowledge required to become a competent practitioner in the profession.

analytical review

Harvey (2006) sees standards of competence as one of four broad areas in higher education where standards are set and assessed:

Standards of competence relate to the technical abilities of students. It is a demonstration that a specified level of ability on a range of competencies has been achieved. Competencies may include general transferable skills as well as ‘higher level’ academic skills appropriate to an award. In some cases competence includes particular abilities congruent with induction into a profession and the award of a licence to practice, as for example, in medicine or law.
