Analytic propositions


core definition

Analytic propositions are true by definition or are logically true, such as mathematical theorems.


explanatory context

Analytic propositions are usually compared to synthetic propositions, which require experiential verification.

 

The distinction derives from the empiricism of Hume, was later labelled and developed in Kantian idealism and is integral to logical positivism.
