Literary criticism
Literary criticism is the examination and analysis of literary works.
There are two broad, and antagonistic, approaches to literary criticism.
The traditional approach is one that explores the literary devices used in works, its style, its relation to a 'grand tradition' of literature, etc. and judges the text on these criteria.
The alternative, structuralist, approach is concerned only with the text as a document, is not concerned with judging whether it is 'great literature' and directs its analysis at the structural elements of the text.
