Modern style

core definition

Modern style was the name given to art nouveau in France in recognition of its English origins.

explanatory context

There is an irony in this use of names! Art nouveau in France tended to make an impact only in luxury items, notably then jewellery and glassware of Rene Lalique and the glassware of Emile Galle. Modern style's most notable impact in architecture was in Hector Grimard's designs for the Paris metro.
